I'll admit that I am partially biased because we moved here, but skiing in Colorado is FANTASTIC. We tend to gravitate away from the major resorts and ski smaller areas like Ski Cooper, Ski Monarch, El Dora, Loveland, etc. The prices are very reasonable and the lift lines are almost non-existent. Does anyone know of any places like this in Utah?

You have definitely reminded me how much I enjoy skiing in Colorado.  So as much as I hate to see summer slipping away, I think it is time to start remembering how much fun can be had in the fall and winter.  With this in mind, I need some key bits of information from our Colorado skiing experts.

First, when does the ski season usually open and when does it actually start to get good?  Second, I know there are a lot of options to ski in Colorado.  With that being said, I would like to hear some recommendations on your favorite places to go from you "locals" out there.  What is your favorite place?  What would you recommend for the guy that is only going to be out there one or two times this season?  Also, because fun in a big part of the program, and ideas on where to eat, drink, etc. are always appreciated that are in the vicinity of your suggested ski resort.  Many thanks!

"High resorts" e.g. Loveland, A Basin - get open in November (although I think we had Halloween skiing recently) There's great early season skiing in December and January. Prime season is usually Feb-Apr

Skiing is always *good* -- it's what you make of it. The better the snow, the bigger the crowds.

There are LOTS of alternatives to skiing in Summit County (e.g. Breckenridge, Copper Mountain, etc.) Try Monarch Mountain or Ski Cooper for more "family friendly" venues with virtually no chance of waiting in a lift line. Also, El Dora is a nice, easy access ski area near Boulder, CO. Loveland has some of the highest terrain (and it's beautiful up there) but you'll still deal with the traffic on I-70 if you're staying in the Denver metro area.

Last -- find the "Colorado Gems" card for discounts at Colorado ski resorts. It's a bargain for all the free and discounted stuff you get. I think they are $10.

I also prefer the smaller venues to the great big ones... I like having more room to ski!

Has anyone been out to try Durango?  I just got an invitation to ski out there this winter and I was interested in some feedback on what you think of the experience.  Thanks!
