Good DC area climbing option

Just enjoyed a two day climbing course at the Seneca Rocks Climbing School in West Virginia. It is a reasonable drive from DC and is perfect for a weekend excursion. Seneca Rocks is one of the best-known landmarks in West Virginia. These rocks have long been noted as a scenic attraction and form a magnificent formation rising nearly 900 feet above the North Fork River. As an interesting bit of history, the U.S. Army trained there during World War II to prepare troops for mountain combat. You can still find some of their old school climbing anchors at various places on the rock. As for the climbing course, being a new climber myself, I took the basic course and had a great time while learning the fundamentals of how to climb, manage ropes, clear protection, etc. I must say that the first time you find yourself rappelling off a serious rock face that it is quite a thrill. I know some of you out there have done so much more, but we all have to start somewhere and after this experience, I'm definitely hooked. The guides were very knowledgeable and a lot of fun, which is a must for this type of activity. If you are looking for a great experience to share with friends within a reasonable "weekend excursion" distance from DC, would recommend you give this a shot.
